Full steam ahead for Foxy Frida

Andrew Noblet received the text he been desperately waiting for from Foxy Frida’s owners – its full steam ahead for the spring with her goal the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 4.

“That was exciting news. She’s come back better each campaign and I’m hoping that will be the case again,” the Ballarat trainer said.

Foxy Frida’s connections waited until the completion of her last successful campaign to decide whether to continue racing her, retire her to stud, or sell her as a broodmare.

It was Foxy Frida who did all the persuading with her best campaign to date.

Her last run in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara Stakes, over 1400m at Eagle Farm, was enough to convince them that she could win a Group 1 race.

Foxy Frida finished sixth from barrier 16 after being eased at the start and she settled well back.

Her Ballarat-based trainer said it was a great run from that barrier.

“We probably knew our fate from the moment of the barrier draw, so for her to finish where she did, in a couple of lengths of the winner, was a great run.”

“They decided to give her another go on the back of that super run. It was also an unsuitable distance at the end of her campaign coming back from a mile,” Noblet said.

Prior to that run, Foxy Frida had won three of her four starts for the campaign which was made up of a first-up win in the Gold Bracelet at Bendigo, a win in the Group 3 Lee Stakes in Adelaide and a win in the Magic Millions National Classic at Eagle Farm (below).

Her only loss was a second in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes at Morphettville second-up.

Noblet said the rising six-year-old mare by Foxwedge had come back better each preparation.

He left Foxy Frida in Queensland to spell and she’s just completed a month in the paddock.

“She’s spelled really well up there. She’s put on a lot of weight. She’s let down better than she ever has, but that’s what she’s been doing in all aspects of her career as she gets older with maturing,” Noblet said.

“She’s got a lot of residual fitness, so it won’t take long for her to get back to race fitness.”

“She’ll arrive back at Ballarat on Tuesday or Wednesday and by the weekend she will be doing light work.”
