A history of success
Mill Park’s reputation as one of the finest thoroughbred nurseries in the country began more than 20 years ago when a cold and wet Adelaide winter led to a truck load of mares arriving at the sheep and cattle property in South Australia.
The more favourable conditions of the south-east corner of South Australia, and the 10,000-acre limestone land, was home to the Watson’s family breeding operation of predominantly sheep and cattle, with the occasional dabble at horse breeding.
Upon the arrival of the mares from Adelaide in 1990, an upward spiral of raising successful racehorses kicked in. And when Group 1 winners Gold Guru and St Clemens Belle began strutting their stuff on the racecourse, Mill Park’s fortunes improved dramatically.
Gold Guru was the Champion Australian 3YO for 1997/1998 with a string of brilliant wins in races such as the AJC Australian Derby and VRC Australian Guineas, while St Clemens Belle won the WATC Fruit ‘n’ Veg Stakes in 1999.
The Watson family turned a hobby into their saving grace as wool prices declined, and since their change in focus, the farm has produced 17 individual Group 1 winners.
Our basic principle of raising thoroughbreds in a natural environment allows each individual to reach their potential, with a mix of precocious juveniles, sprinter milers, classic three-year-old’s and high-class weight-for-age horses all produced on the farm.
We are extremely proud of our success and are optimistic for the future of Mill park with current star gallopers Warning and Away Game flying the flag.
